Jeremy Corbyn Equality mug
‘We don't have to be unequal, it doesn't have to be unfair, poverty isn't inevitable, things can and they will change.’
Jeremy Corbyn spoke these words after he was voted in as Labour leader on 11th September 2015. His victory came from the backing of 250,000 supporters for his ‘anti-austerity’ platform, giving him the largest mandate ever won by a party leader.
And he kept up his record-breaking performance in 2017 too, when he was re-elected MP for Islington North in that election with allegedly the largest vote in the borough’s history. The party generally improved its standing that year: when Prime Minister Theresa May called the 2017 general election with the intention of increasing her slender majority, Labour was trailing the Conservatives by up to 25 points in the opinion polls. By the time of the election Labour had increased its share of the popular vote to 40%, resulting in a gain of 32 seats, whilst the Conservatives lost their majority.
Corbyn describes himself as a ‘democratic socialist’ and advocates the re-nationalisation of public utilities, the abolition of university tuition fees, and is personally in favour of unilateral nuclear disarmament (although the Labour Party has rejected this stance in its manifesto).
