Peterloo Massacre mug
This mug commemorates the Peterloo massacre. In 1819 a crowd of 70,000 gathered peacefully in St Peter's Field Manchester to demand political reform. At the request of magistrates they were charged by cavalry; 15 lost their lives and up to 700 were injured. The infamous massacre became known as Peterloo (recalling the Battle of Waterloo) and eventually led to fairer suffrage. This design is based on a cartoon by Cruickshank. The horror felt across the country at the news of peaceable protestors being killed and injured is summed up by Cruikshank's depiction of the cavalrymen as wielding meat cleavers rather than the swords they actually employed.
