Eleanor Marx tea towel

This socialist tea towel celebrates Eleanor Marx (1855 -1898). Although lesser known than her father, the youngest daughter of Karl Marx, Eleanor, led an extraordinary life as a labour organiser, trade unionist, translator, actor, writer and campaigner for women’s rights. She joined the Social Democratic Federation, Britain's first socialist party, where she was elected to the executive, having had a reputation as one of the best orators in England. However, disagreeing with the way it was being run, she left in 1884 to form the Socialist League with William Morris, establishing it as its revolutionary rival. Not surprisingly, she became an ardent Marxist; as well as editing her father’s papers, she wrote several books and articles herself and examined the role of theatre in propagating socialism.
