"But we know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians". This quote from Nelson Mandela comes from a speech he made during the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Pretoria, South Africa, on 4th December 1997.
While we are all aware of Nelson Mandela's lifelong fight in South Africa against the horrific apartheid regime of the time, we should not forget his support and fight for the liberation of all oppressed peoples around the world, and in particular his opposition to the Israeli military occupation of Palestine, involving limits to movement of Palestinians, the displacement of thousands of families, the destruction of homes and the establishment of illegal settlements on the West Bank.
UPDATE: Since the outbreak of war In October 2023, following the vicious attacks by Hamas on Israel which killed 1139 Israelis, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed, of which, according to UNICEF, an unprecedented 40% are children. Nearly 2 million (85% of the population) are now displaced from their homes and many lack basic food and water or are starving. The United Nations has described the crisis as a "political and humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions."
